“Literature Course at SDSU Utilizes Prairie at Cow Camp Ranch”
South Dakota Magazine
pub. Bernie Hunhoff, September 2004
When plows broke the prairie sod some 100 years ago, snapping an ancient root system that extended for miles, witnesses compared the sound to that of pistols being fired in rapid succession. This sound would echo across the grasslands of America for years, signaling the devastation of the native prairies and of the diverse and extensive ecosystem that relies upon grass for survival.
At one time, 40 percent of the North American continent was grassland; today, only 10 percent of native prairie remains, mostly in small patches of land bordered by crops or urban development.
Roger Gerdes thinks that 10 per cent is worth preserving.
