“Reflections on Land and People”
One House, Many Skies
ed. Peter Carrels, The Granary Rural Cultural Center, 2003
My hours on the prairie taught me the value of sitting still, of observing my surroundings, of daydreaming, and of imagining. To this day I do not understand boredom. As a child I was never bored; the world around me was much too interesting and diverse. I also learned to crave solitude because being alone allowed me to be curious about the larger world. To this day, when I need to think something through or when I feel sad or anxious, I walk a shelter belt near my home.
